NEW PRESIDENT ELECTED

The local progressive political organization, Progressive Action, has elected a new President, as well as a new member of its 10-member Steering Committee.

The newly elected President is Tim Musick. Musick is an elected Supervisor in Lakewood Township, Northeastern Minnesota’s Regional Director for the Minnesota Association of Professional Employees (MAPE), and an employee of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency in Duluth.

“Progressive Action shares the progressive political philosophies of the late Senator Paul Wellstone,” Musick commented, stressing the need to continue forming a strong coalition of progressive individuals and organizations. “Our purpose is to solidify those progressive ideals through individual and organizational activism. Progressive Action will continue to encourage, endorse, and support progressive candidates for pubic office.”

Musick replaces Barb Olsen, who has served as President for the past year. “It’s been great fun to help bring progressives in the region together into a force to be reckoned with,” Olsen commented. “We’ve endorsed and assisted many fine progressive candidates, including Duluth City Councilors Laurie Johnson, Russ Stewart, and Russ Stover plus County Commissioners Peg Sweeney and Steve O’Neil, and we plan to extend our efforts to School Board races as well. Progressive Action has also worked hard to help people learn how to run for office and work on local political campaigns, and we’ve made it a priority to host forums on crucial issues such as attempts by the White house to privatize Social Security.”

The organization also elected a new board member, Barb Russ. Russ has been involved in party politics at the precinct level for 25 years and says she recently decided to focus on progressive issues outside the two-party system. “I want to help educate the public about progressive positions on issues and help get progressive candidates elected to public office,” Russ commented. “I am particularly interested in protecting civil liberties and in anti-war activities.”

Progressive Action was formed in 2003 and is a group of volunteers in Northeastern Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin, formed after the death of Paul Wellstone, to help continue his work on issues such as affordable housing, living wages, and electing progressives to local office. Progressive Action is not affiliated with any particular political party.
